How Childhood Trauma May Have Triggered Your Hashimoto's

Posted by Kelsey Juntwait on

The trauma you previously experienced in your childhood could be the reason you were diagnosed with Hashimoto's in your adulthood. Which means that managing — and even healing from — your Hashimoto's could be as easy as healing from the childhood trauma you might be repressing.

Childhood Trauma

Simply put, childhood trauma is any traumatic event experienced in childhood. And the trauma we're talking about can be anything — including physical and emotional neglect, bullying, witnessing a traumatic event, living in an unpredictable environment, having a family member with mental illness, experiencing parents getting a divorce, losing a loved one, as well as going through a natural disaster.

And while everyone's experience with childhood trauma is different, the fact that there are repercussions of that trauma in adulthood is what's similar.

Childhood trauma can manifest itself in so many different ways in adulthood. These include signs and symptoms that are physical, emotional, and even behavioral.

Common signs of childhood trauma that become exposed in adulthood can include:

  • Unexplained sadness, anger or anxiety
  • Heightened emotions
  • Feeling disconnected from others
  • Difficulty regulating emotions
  • Avoidance of certain activities or people
  • Memory loss
  • Low self-esteem
  • Physical aches and pains with no medical cause
  • Difficulty forming trusting relationships
  • Feelings of insecurity or low self-worth
  • Fear of intimacy
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Anger issues
  • Self harm
  • Eating disorders
  • Substance abuse
  • Avoidance of interpersonal relationships
  • Poor self-esteem
  • An inability to cope with stress or difficult situations
  • Headaches
  • Digestive issues
  • Brain fog
  • People pleasing
  • Perfectionism
  • Dissociation
  • Autoimmune disorders

Childhood Trauma & Autoimmune Disorders

Dealing with trauma in childhood can ultimately overwhelm the body with stress hormones, keeping it in a hyper-vigilant inflammatory state. Once that child gets to adulthood, if the trauma hasn't been dealt with, then it gets harder for that person to manage, maintain, and regulate their stress response and their nervous system. Which — over time — can further can lead to an autoimmune disorder like Hashimoto's.

Childhood Trauma & Hashimoto's

Hashimoto's is caused by the immune system attacking the thyroid gland. And this can be caused by environmental triggers such as prolonged stress, living in survival mode for far too long, and the inability to regulate your stress response as a result of experiencing childhood trauma. Hence why childhood trauma may have very well triggered your hashimoto's...

Hashimoto's & Somatic Exercises

People living with hashimoto's go to extravagant lengths to find the right lifestyle changes, medications, supplements, and doctors to manage and control the symptoms of their condition. But rather than simply manage and control the symptoms, somatic exercises offers an answer that addresses the root cause of why you have hashimoto's in the first place.

Somatic exercises are gentle movements that connect your physical body and emotional body to both your nervous system and your somatic memory. This process of movement allows you to actually heal the symptoms that manifest in the body and mind after experiencing any form of trauma, including long-term stress, chronic anxiety, and both long-term and short-term physical trauma.

Try one of our somatic exercise programs to get to the root cause of your hashiomto's, allowing you to actually heal from it naturally.
