5 Tips To Deal With Holiday Stress This Season

Posted by Kelsey Juntwait on

Whether it’s stress from the financial burden of the holidays or it’s the vivid memories of a family member you’ve been grieving or if it’s just the anxiety of overwhelming social settings this time of year, it’s important to manage your mental wellbeing right now.

Here are 5 quick tips to prioritize your mental sanity to survive the holiday stress this year:

1) Spend time alone when you need to.

There’s no need to be constantly surrounded by activities during the holiday season. Be sure to take a step back and recharge when needed. Don’t be afraid to say “no” to plans. Or even cancel them if it’s in your best interest!

2) Take more baths.

Holiday stress will increase inflammation in your body as well as create a hormonal imbalance — which then leads to high blood pressure, a weak immune system, weight gain, brain fog, and a variety of other disruptions in the body. Taking a bath may seem cliche but baths are proven to reverse the negative side effects of stress. Plus, they help elevate mood, eliminate toxins, and get your sleep schedule back on track.

3) Take a personal day.

There's no shame in taking a day off to prioritize your mental health. If you can take a day off for the flu, you can take a day off for a holiday depression you've fallen into. Be open with your boss about it. Let them know that your best work can't be done when you're feeling like this.

4) Drink More Water

Drinking water is the easiest way to improve your energy level and brain function. It also flushes out the toxins from your body naturally. So make sure you're staying hydrated. (Especially with all those holiday cocktails!)

Keep a bottle of water with you at every holiday party.

5) Do somatic exercises.

Somatic exercises are gentle movements that connect your physical body to your emotional body. They’re clinically proven to regulate your nervous system, rid your body of stress, AND release the stored trauma that’s been stored in your body’s regulatory systems. Once the trauma has been released through somatic movements, health conditions that come from stress like frequent headaches, gut issues, sleeping problems, and physical pain will begin to subside. Doing somatic exercises throughout the holiday season will allow you to prioritize your own wellbeing, as well as significantly reduce your body and mind's physical and psychological reaction to any stress or anxiety you’ve been feeling (or are about to feel...!).
